About the Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum, located in the historic center of Paris, is one of the most important and visited museums in the world. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when it was built as a medieval fortress, although it was later transformed into a royal palace. After the French Revolution it opened its doors as a public museum in 1793. Today it houses an extraordinary artistic collection ranging from ancient civilizationsto European art of the nineteenth century.

The audioguide tour allows you to explore the museum in complete freedom, discovering its most outstanding galleries and understanding the evolution of art through different cultures and periods. Among the must-see works are Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the imposing Victory of Samothrace and the famous Venus de Milo . The tour also allows visitors to appreciate paintings, sculptures and antiques that reflect the artistic richness of world history.

“Every work of art is an adventure into the unknown.” – Henri Matisse

Curiosities

  • Before becoming a museum, the Louvre served for centuries as the residence of French monarchs, especially during the reign of Louis XIV, who later moved the court to the Palace of Versailles.
  • Remains of the original medieval fortress that formed part of the city’s defenses in the Middle Ages can still be seen beneath the museum.
  • The Louvre is so vast that touring all its rooms can involve more than 14 kilometers of galleries, which explains why many visitors choose to explore it with an audioguide and select the works they wish to see beforehand.
